In Pakistan, for every 4 primary schools, there is one middle school, for every 10 primary schools, there is only one secondary school. Affordable Private Schools are a response to fill this gap.

The sector of “Affordable Private Schools” (APS)—independent schools in low-income areas that can cost as little as $2/month—has the opportunity to transform education for low-income children worldwide.  The sector is growing rapidly: today there are an estimated 100,000 APS in India, 70,000 in Pakistan, and hundreds of thousands more worldwide from Africa to Latin America. The growth can be attributed to parents growing frustrated with the government-run schools and wanting an alternative.

In the evolution of a sector - from nascent to mainstream, and all that is in between - there are moments that stand out, moments that signal “arrival,” in a sense. And I can’t help but think that the Affordable Private School sector, both conceptually and practically, is now making its loud first bleep on the radar.

There is a palpable excitement in the crowd. A sense of being in the right place at the right time. A feeling of being part of a sector that is moving forward, not standing still. For Affordable Private Schools, the time is now.

The Central Government of India signed into law The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 on April 1, 2010. Under the Act, all schools need to immediately seek recognition from the appropriate authority, and then they have to comply with the norms prescribed within a period of three years from commencement of the Act. Otherwise, they face the possibility of closure.
