Carrying IDEX Forward

Ilana Shushanky

Although my time as an IDEX Fellow is winding down, my workload and time in India are far from over. Since receiving a grant from the Nike Foundation to pilot an English immersion and gender empowerment girls summer camp in the 11 schools IDEX has been working with, it seems my to-do list just keeps growing, along side my learning from this social space, as well as my personal growth and motivation to continue work in India.

The Money Conundrum

Yasmine McMorrin

Q: What is usually missing between inspiration and action?

A: Money.

Okay, maybe this equation doesn’t hold constant in every situation. However, this is the case in many of the Affordable Private Schools (APS) in Hyderabad. There are many excellent ideas for growth, strengthening education, training teachers and improving infrastructure. However the access to these opportunities are usually available to those who can afford them.

Due to this predicament, I’ve repeatedly asked myself, “How many ways can I raise a rupee?”

I can rattle off a whole list of challenges that come along with working in an affordable private school on the outskirts of Hyderabad, but there is one in particular that really gets me. No one says no! When my students only answer affirmatively, I can tell they are trying to avoid something. But what exactly are they shying away from?

This section of the blog is called Stories from the Field and I took my inspiration from the title for this post. What follows is a touching story from the 6 months I’ve had in India so far.

School Picnics - An Optional Luxury

One of the great challenges of being a social business is making sure your drive to be sustainable through profits does not undermine your social impact. I came across an excellent example of just such a conflict last week. Its annual school picnic season in India and Grace Model School recently held their picnic at a festive park made to look like the deserts of Rajasthan. They charged 200 INR(4USD approx)per student, which included lunch. The day was a great success, with an enthusiastic turn-out from students and teachers.

Who is the real customer - Parents or Students ?

Living in India and experiencing the affordable private school (APS) for the past few months has encouraged me to take a good hard look at the current educational systems in place in these schools. In taking this assignment, my intent was to give my school owner and teacher’s an alternate perspective; sharing with them how things operate in other parts of the world so together could improve upon the current systems and ultimately the quality of education. It is a rather simple, idealistic goal that has faced a great deal of adversary.
