Many winding by-lanes lead to Adams School, in the densely populated Old City Area of Hyderabad. One could easily miss it in the row of buildings on either side of the road, were it not for the fact that everyone in the area knows the school and knows its very young and very smart owner, Mr. Mahmud Saleem. The entrance to the school is misleading, making you believe that you are entering someone's private chambers - "This is the front office ma'am," said the petite Burka clad girl who then proceeded to part the curtains at the further end of the room with a flourish. And there, in front of us, was Adams School. A big courtyard surrounded on two sides by offices and classrooms, with more classes on the 2nd floor and lots of construction on the 1st floor - Adams School is obviously in expansion mode!

Mr. Saleem epitomizes the generation today - smart, business savvy, and very tech friendly! I was really impressed with the various computer applications and software he uses to keep track of class attendance, results, teacher orientation, teacher database, fees, salaries, and every conceivable approach that enables him to be on top of things including sending sms's to parents of absentee children! Very advanced and very impressive to parents too! This level of organization and efficiency allows him to spend a lot of time in classrooms and be hands-on with the teaching and learning going on in the classroom.
When asked about his aspirations to start a school, he made no qualms about the fact that starting a school provided him with a commercially viable start to his career - after all, he was only 21 when he started the school. He was clear that he wanted high enrollment but never compromised on quality, and is proud that he provides affordable education to the children in the neighborhood. He cherishes the memory of his own school - Vidya Bharati - that was ahead of its time by imparting activity-based teaching that was at the time unheard of. He is associated with Empathy Learning Systems and avails of their phonics and English language programs. But being an ambitious man, he is very keen to have more student and teacher training, particularly science and social science practicals.
After my very enlightening crash course in technology applications, I was introduced to the administrator, Ms. Abida who, ever the perfect hostess, was proud to have me meet her extended family. Here are my notes from my meeting the various school constituents. Teachers: The teachers employed in the school all belong to the local neighborhood and have great respect for Mr. Saleem, almost bordering on awe. While most of them are young and not very experienced, the tools Mr. Saleem provides them ensures that they put in their best and he gets the best out of them. His “teacher responsibility charts”, the “code of corrections” and “slip tests” are great teacher development tools.
Teacher 1: Ms. Hina Sultana Hina has been teaching for 4 months and teaches Phonics, English, and Urdu to the pre-primary classes. Interacting with Hina, you can see why she is so popular with the tots - she absolutely relates with them at their level and is like a young mom to all of them. I had a lot of fun in her class singing 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' at the top of my voice with the kids, much to their amusement. Children laughing creates such positive energy and this is what Hina brings to her students. Hina spoke about her own schooling, emotionally recalling, "My parents were poor with immense financial hardships, but they knew that education would help me earn a good income and have a better life." So she and her siblings made it through school and she is eternally grateful to her parents for the teaching opportunities available to her. Seeing how her parents fully supported her education, she appeals to all parents to take an active interest in their children's' studies and to completely support them in fulfilling their dreams. For the next generation, she wishes that they study further, soar higher and. utilize their skills and knowledge to give back to society.
Teacher 2: Ms. Shahrish Banu Shahrish has been teaching for 3 years and moved away from Gowtham School to teach at Adams - she is Mr. Saleem's sister, so no surprises there! Straightaway, what caught my attention was that she shares the same intent and fire in her eyes that I perceived in Mr. Saleem. A fully qualified teacher, holding a B.Ed degree, she enjoys working with private schools as her experience with Gowtham and Adams has shown that private schools are very open to training methodologies and provide better training programs - great encouragement for the sector! As a student of Mr. Anwar, she also had the opportunity to meet Prof. Tooley and learn about his research - no wonder then that she is so invested in the APS sector and dreams of opening a school that provides a supportive and conducive atmosphere to learning for children! She would like to expand her own skills by learning communication skills to be able to teach more effectively. She believes, "Teachers should be friendly but not overly familiar with students to provide the balance.
