The Drop-Out

This section of the blog is called Stories from the Field and I took my inspiration from the title for this post. What follows is a touching story from the 6 months I’ve had in India so far.
As an ex-pat working in education, drop-outs are concerning. I reflexively want to do what I can to keep kids in schools. Working at Grace has given me an even greater understanding of how challenging this simple goal can be. When discussing a boy in 6th class at my school one day, my principal mentioned that his younger brother had dropped out. I asked why, since Grace has a forgiving policy towards tuition payments, especially in the case of siblings, and often helps students apply for external scholarships in order to continue their education. She explained that the boys’ father had left the family. With no explanation or provision for their future, they were abandoned by the man charged with their well-being in a patriarchal community. Their mother struggles to care for the family, taking odd jobs in sewing or housework where she can but relying heavily on her children to help at home. Private school tuition, even Grace’s famously low fees, was taking a toll. So her younger son decided there was even more he could do to help. He voluntarily dropped-out of 5th grade to get a job. He says his brother always did better in school, so if they couldn’t afford both, the stronger student should stay. He hangs back each morning now, as his siblings leave for school, waiting another hour or so until the shops open to leave for work.
An ineffable sadness fills me when I think of this story. It’s hard to accept that such matter-of-fact assessments of necessity and self-worth are possible at that age. It’s even harder to accept that I live in a world where children make these trade-offs willingly. I’ll always want him to go school but, at the same time, I respect the sacrifice he’s made. There are days it’s hard to get out of bed and come to work. There aren’t as many of those days when you work with kids like this.
(Grace Model School is doing what they can for the family. They helped the older son win a scholarship through the NAM foundation, which covers 4 months tuition and all his materials. They’re hoping to secure a government scholarship, which they will then stretch to cover 2 or even 3 of his siblings. With luck, all of these children will be back in class next year. As they say here in Old City, Inshallah. )
