Revisiting the success of private schools in Kenya

The success of private primary schools in Kenya, measured in terms of number of pupils sent on to national secondary schools, has made parents desperate to enroll their children in these schools. They do this without considering that it is the high-cost private schools that do well.

The author cites instances of malpractice by private schools to retain their high ranking. He, however, adds that isolated incidents cannot take away from the achievements of private schools. The author states that:

  • Teachers in private schools take their work more seriously;
  • Parents of students in private institutions willingly invest in learning resources at start of term;
  • Students in public schools have to wait for free learning resources that come mid-way through the term.
