Private provision of education in China

The huge population base of China creates the largest education industry in the world. Private schools have played an important role in modern Chinese education.

The author examines the history of education provision in China, and traces the roots of private education to Confucius. Findings indicate that:

  • Currently available literature does not adequately examine the impact of private education;
  • Continuing expansion of public education may pose serious challenges to private schools in the future;
  • Current private education in China is different from that a few decades ago as it is more market-oriented and commercialized;
  • Resource diversification and expansion needs to be balanced with quality.
