Role played by private budget schools in India

The ecosystem development project aims to ensure that private budget schools serving low-income families offer quality education.

The author studied 42 private budget schools in old Hyderabad city, India, to enable Gray Matters Capital (GMC) to gain an understanding of their current offerings. The research revealed the importance of the private sector as engines of growth at the bottom of the pyramid. It revealed that:

  • A large number of budget schools cater to various income categories;
  • Constrained by parents’ low incomes and competition within the private sector, budget schools attempt to operate under low costs, leading to sub-optimal learning achievements;
  • Budget schools also face restrictive government regulations;
  • GMC has a crucial role to play in directing support to the private budget school sector in urban India.
