Role of independent schools in Kenya

Directors of independent schools in Kenya established the Kenya Independent Schools Association (KISA) in 1999 so that they could work together to address and overcome the various challenges they faced.

The author reviews the independent school sector in Kenya and the operations of KISA, and explores potential partnerships between Gray Matters Capital (GMC) and KISA to enhance the independent school sector. She states that:

  • KISA schools offer better quality education than public schools in terms of fees, class sizes and presence in low-income areas;
  • KISA schools have trained and competent teachers who focus on quality education and children’s needs;
  • Kenyan government will recognize KISA for its role in providing quality education to low-income families;
  • GMC can partner with KISA in strategic planning, quality assurance, financial transparency and capacity building and training.
